On 13 December 1991, the flame was ceremoniously lit at Olympia in accordance with the traditional rites.

On 14 December, the flame was officially handed over to the presidents of COJO by the president of the HOC (Hellenic Olympic Committee). It was Jean-Claude Killy who carried the miner’s lamp which protected the flame onto Concorde for its journey to France.

As of December 15, the 57-day route through France began with the help of 5,500 torchbearers aged 15 and 20 to end on February 8, 1992 at the opening ceremony.
