Seven towns were candidates for the XVI Olympic Winter Games: Anchorage (USA), Berchtesgaden (Germany), Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy), Falun (Sweden), Lillehammer (Norway), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Albertville. The selection of the town to organize the Games took place on October 17 1986 in Lausanne, during the 91st IOC session.
